1. On your LinkedIn profile you’re listed as a Designer, Teaching Artist, and Promoter of Truth. Can you elaborate on that last bit?
I'm curious to see what you think that means before I elaborate.
2. To what extent to the interests of the consumer influence your artistic process?
Our first objective is to make works that push people to think. That is the key thing that influences our design.
The environment around us also influences the subject matter of our works. Lately our work has taken a serious undertone grappling with the racial disparities that still exist today. Once we have a gist of the subject matter, we let the subject dictate what materials should be used and so forth.
3. Do you think of yourself as more of an artist or more of an entrepreneur?
Both. To be a successful artist, we believe it's commodious to wear both hats. We don't make work to just make a dollar but we understand you have to itemize your costs to produce work, labor and time collectively. We factor in a viable price point in order to make a profit to keep creating because no artist want's to make work and end up in the red.
4. What can you tell us about the work you intend to show at the Art. Work. exhibition?
Personally, I've been a big fan of old letterpress posters for quite some time. The "I Am A Man" civil rights poster has always been on my radar as well. I like it because it utilizes a simple layout yet it's message was a behemoth. We wanted to make a modern day version since that message is still as relevant today. The exciting thing for us is that we experimented with
silk-screening on sheets of mylar to give the works the resemblance of mirrored glass. We wanted the message to appear re-assuring to the viewer. Along with the posters, we've decided to pair it with a small run of booklets that can be purchased during the show.
